Wi-Fi not reaching one room? 9 fixes that actually work

When the Wi-Fi works everywhere except one room, the fix is usually cheaper than a new router. Start from the top of this list and re-test after each step.

It's one of the most common home Wi-Fi problems: great signal in the living room, nothing in the bedroom, the home office or upstairs. The good news is that a problem limited to one room is almost always a coverage problem, and coverage problems can be fixed. Work through these steps in order, from free to paid, and re-test after each one.

First: confirm it's really that room

Before changing anything, make sure the problem is coverage and not your internet line. Run the same test next to the router and in the problem room:

  • Slow in both places: it's your internet plan, provider or router, not the room.
  • Fast near the router, slow in the room: it's coverage. Keep reading.

1. Move the router closer to the center

The single most effective free fix. A router in a corner or at one end of the house sends its best signal where you don't need it. Move it toward the middle of your home, even by a few meters, and re-test. Our guide on where to put your router covers the details.

2. Raise it and get it out in the open

Take the router off the floor, out of the cabinet and away from the TV. A shelf at chest height or higher, with nothing solid around it, often turns a weak room into a usable one.

3. Remove what's in between

Look at the straight line between the router and the room. Big mirrors, metal shelves, a fridge, a fish tank or a stack of electronics can each cost a lot of signal. Moving one object is sometimes enough.

4. Choose the right band for that room

Most routers broadcast on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz:

  • 2.4 GHz travels further and goes through walls better, but it's slower and more crowded.
  • 5 GHz is much faster, but its range is shorter and walls weaken it more.

If the room is far away or behind several walls, a device on 2.4 GHz may stay connected where 5 GHz fails. Many routers use a single network name and choose automatically; if yours has separate names for each band, try the 2.4 GHz network in the problem room.

5. Adjust the antennas

On routers with external antennas, try one vertical and one horizontal. If the problem room is on another floor, the horizontal antenna often makes the bigger difference.

6. Restart and update the router

Routers that have been running for months can become unstable, and firmware updates frequently improve performance. Restart it, then check the manufacturer's app or admin page for updates.

7. Change the Wi-Fi channel

In apartment buildings, dozens of networks compete on the same channels. Most routers pick a channel automatically, but a restart can move them to a less crowded one. On 2.4 GHz, channels 1, 6 and 11 are the ones that don't overlap.

8. Run a cable to the room if you can

A wired connection is the most reliable way to bring internet into a room. An Ethernet cable to a second access point, or directly to a desktop computer or TV, avoids Wi-Fi limits entirely. Where running a cable isn't possible, powerline adapters use your electrical wiring instead; their performance depends a lot on the wiring, so test before you commit.

9. Add a mesh node or an extender, in the right spot

If the room is still weak after the free fixes, it's time for extra hardware. The key rule: place the new device where the signal is still good, roughly halfway between the router and the problem room, not inside the weak room. A mesh node or extender that receives a poor signal can only pass on a poor signal.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Wi-Fi weak only in my bedroom?

Usually because of distance and what's in between: walls, a bathroom, a staircase or a floor slab. Bedrooms are often at the far end of the home from where the internet line arrives.

Do Wi-Fi booster apps work?

No. Apps can't increase your router's signal. They can only help you measure it, so you know where to act.

Is 2.4 GHz better for rooms far from the router?

Often, yes. 2.4 GHz reaches further and passes through walls better than 5 GHz, at the cost of lower top speed.

Will a new router fix Wi-Fi in one room?

Sometimes, if your router is very old. But a new router in the same corner usually leaves the same room weak. Try moving your current router first, and measure.
