Mesh vs Wi-Fi extender: which one do you need?
Both promise Wi-Fi in every room, but they work very differently. Here's how to choose, and how to check whether you need either before buying.

When Wi-Fi doesn't reach a room, the internet suggests two products: a Wi-Fi extender (also called a repeater or booster) or a mesh system. They look similar on a shelf, but they solve the problem in different ways, and choosing the wrong one wastes money. Before either, make sure you've tried the free fixes, starting with where to put your router.
How a Wi-Fi extender works
An extender sits between your router and the weak area. It receives the router's signal and rebroadcasts it further.
- Cheap and easy: you plug it into a wall socket and connect it to your network.
- Speed loss: a basic extender uses the same radio to talk to the router and to your devices, so devices connected through it can lose a large share of the speed. Dual-band models reduce the loss but rarely eliminate it.
- Separate network, sometimes: many extenders create their own network name, and your phone may stay stuck on the weaker one as you walk around.
- Placement is everything: it has to be where the router's signal is still good. In the dead zone itself, it amplifies a poor signal.
How mesh Wi-Fi works
A mesh system replaces or extends your router with several units ("nodes") that work together as one network.
- One network name: your devices move between nodes as you walk through the house.
- Better speed at distance: nodes are designed to talk to each other efficiently, and higher-end systems use a dedicated radio or an Ethernet cable for that link.
- Managed together: one app configures and updates the whole system.
- More expensive: a system with two or three nodes costs several times more than a basic extender.

A third option: a wired access point
If you can run an Ethernet cable to the weak area, a wired access point (or a mesh node connected by cable) is the best-performing option. The cable carries the connection at full speed, and the access point creates strong Wi-Fi exactly where you need it. Powerline adapters with built-in Wi-Fi are an alternative when running a cable isn't possible, but results depend on your electrical wiring.
Which one should you choose?
- One room is weak, the home is small, budget is tight: an extender, placed halfway between the router and the room.
- A whole floor is weak, or the home is large: a mesh system, ideally with at least one node on each floor.
- Several walls of stone or concrete: mesh, or wired access points if you can run cables.
- You work from home and need stable video calls everywhere: mesh with wired backhaul, or wired access points.
- Everything is slow, including next to the router: neither. The problem is your internet plan or the router itself.
Check whether you need one at all

Is mesh better than an extender?
For large homes and multiple floors, generally yes: one network, smoother roaming and better speed at distance. For a single weak room in a small home, a well-placed extender can be enough.
Do Wi-Fi extenders slow down the internet?
Devices connected through an extender are often slower than devices connected directly to the router, because the extender has to share its radio time. The effect is strongest with basic single-band models.
Where should I put a mesh node or extender?
Where the signal from the router is still good, roughly halfway toward the weak area. Never inside the dead zone itself.
Can I use an extender with a mesh system?
It's usually better to add another node from the same mesh system. Mixing an extender into a mesh network can create a separate network and undo the benefits of mesh.
